A handful of veterans have been holding Veterans Day ceremonies every year to raise awareness for the Van Cortlandt Park Memorial Grove, which honors over 30 deceased war heroes. The Grove fell apart over the years, but the Parks Department has finally been able to begin restoring the plaques and planting new trees.
At last year's ceremony, Herb Barrett, the president of the VCP Memorial Grove Restoration Group, said that he hoped next year (this year) he would be standing in front of construction equipment. There's not much construction equipment there, but at least the restoration is happening.
