On Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. teamed up with Western Beef for the company’s annual giveaway of 2,500 free turkeys to Bronx families in need. Borough President Diaz participated in the turkey distribution at the corner of West Burnside Avenue and Grand Avenue, where more than 400 free turkeys were given away to residents.

Diaz will be giving away hundreds of free turkeys as part of his annual turkey giveaway at various locations in the Bronx throughout this week.

Savor the Bronx during Restaurant Week

Prepare to loosen your belt buckles and prime your palates: It’s time to eat.

The inaugural Bronx restaurant week, which kicked off on Tuesday and runs through November 13, will showcase the borough’s rich cultural diversity and dining scene.

Under the initiative, more than 30 restaurants will offer patrons a range of special discounts and promotions including prix-fixe three-course meals, complimentary coffee and dessert or 20 percent off the entire tab.

Among the participants include old-school Italian joint Mike’s Deli on Arthur Avenue, classical French restaurant Bistro SK on City Island and Riverdale Steak House. Three local Applebee’s branches are even getting involved.

Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. said the event would provide diners a chance to sample some of the borough’s finest food.

“I invite everyone to visit and savor the Bronx,” he said. “Our inaugural Savor the Bronx! Restaurant Week is the ideal time to try a new restaurant or return to a favorite. The Bronx is your oyster.”

Fashion Week ends and a much better week, Craft Beer Week, begins

Rejoice, beer fans of the Bronx! It's Craft Beer Week!

Better than Fashion Week.

Now that all those hoytie toytie fashionistas of the world are done with their "art," us real New Yorkers can get down to enjoying what's important in life: ice cold beer.

From Sept. 16-25, the fourth annual New York Craft Beer Week will be taking over bars and restaurants throughout the city. Over 100 venues are participating with discounts on craft beer, music, parties, giveaways and so much more. You can purchase a 'passport' that will give you the opportunity to buy your first beer at each bar for only $3. They also allow you to buy it as an app for your Android or iPhone, so you can just show that to the bartender for the discount.

Enjoy over 150 craft beer destinations with the much-anticipated NYC Beer Passport 2011, the official NY Craft Beer Week program and resource guide. Passports are $10, and allows for promotional offers at participating venues. During the Beer Week, use your Passport to purchase a beer from each bar's featured brewery, and instead of paying $6 or 7, it's only $3 for the same beer through the Passport program (Passports have an offer for one serving at each bar). The bars will also offer a one-time promotion of $2 off a NY State produced beer through Labor Day 2012 to extend the Passport's value for those consumers unable to visit every bar during the Beer Week (offers may vary).

Unfortunately, you'll only find three places in the Boogie Down where the week will be celebrated. The availability for craft beer in the Bronx still isn't where it should be, though the guys from the Bronx Brewery and Jonas Bronck's Beer Co. are quickly changing that.

Jeter closing in on 3k

New York Yankee captain Derek Jeter is four hits away from 3,000. Not only would he become the first Yankee to ever do so, there's a very good chance it's going to happen at the Stadium. The Bronx Bombers begin a four-game homestand against the Rays Thursday, and ticket prices are starting to skyrocket.

The 'Jeter Meter' has been counting down Jeter's quest for 3,000.

As a big Yankee fan myself, I have season tickets on Fridays (so we all know when I want it to happen). I also know that the average ticket price for a bleacher or 400 level seat on a regular Thursday goes for around $15, and they drop as low as $5 the day of. Tickets for this Thursday's game are already at least $40 for the same area--up over %100 from just two days ago.
